Got 5 minutes to spare? Then you’ve got time to clean up your hard drive. It takes only a few minutes out of your busy day to get rid of temporary files that could be taking up space without you even realizing it. Let’s get this done!
On your Windows 7 computer, search Disk Cleanup in the the search box in the Start Menu. Then click the icon.
If you’re using Windows 8.1, search “free up disk space” and click on Free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files.
Windows will scan your computer and show you the files it thinks you might want to delete. This includes downloaded program files, temporary Internet files, temp files, offline web pages and archived Windows error reports. It will also show you how much space each of these things are taking up. This is a screen shot on my computer. Yep, that’s a whopping 1.26 GB of space that can be freed up. You can click on each category to see an explanation of what those types of files do on your computer. Mark a check next to the types of files you wish to clean up. You can also choose to view those files to see exactly what you’ll be deleting. Then click OK to start the clean-up.
Even with the large amount of files I had hogging space on my disk, it only took a couple of minutes to finish the task. Don’t you wish it was that easy to clean out a closet.
